Once I spoke at a high school. After the speech, I was asked to see a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed.
He was Matthew. When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal weight lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles (障碍) and going for my dreams.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain. He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me.
When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”
Last summer I got the news that Matthew had passed away and a letter Matthew had written me a few days before:
Dear Rick,
My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. The doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more. But I still smile as much as I can.
I told you some day I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I’ll never make it. But I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you.
Thank you for loving me.

How to Make the Most of Your Time
Time management is important in our daily life. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to accomplish all you need to do. Here are some tips that might be of some help to you .
1. Set up a plan. Go for a week at a time, and prioritize the most important ones. Include things you want to accomplish. Focus mostly on the things that are important to you.
2. Control your stress. No matter what kind of pressure mounts on you, try to keep cool. Stressing out can lead to an early breakdown, which is definitely counter-productive (事与愿违) when you have a list of things to do. It's easier to take a 10-minute break and cool off than work all week with built up stress.
3. Shut your door. When working under a schedule, perform your important tasks with your door shut to get them done. This will ensure a better quality time to get what needs to be done, done.
4. Focus on one thing at a time. Forget trying to multi-task! You will lose concentration, and it will take you longer to accomplish what you set out to do.
5. Just say "no." If you are constantly interrupted, and you really don't have the time to help out, just say "no." You're only one person, and you can't save the world by yourself!
6. Stop wasting time on the phone. While talking on the phone, keep your conversations short, and to the point and you'll waste much less time.
7. Be realistic. You can only do what you can do. Don't set out to accomplish the impossible. Do your best, but keep realistic expectations of yourself.
8. Relax. The most important thing is remember to take time to relax, and regroup. You need a break every now and then to keep working efficiently. Even if it's a 10-minute walk, get away from your list and get refreshed.
As families today get busier and busier, it's important to your own mental health to keep things on track. Don't delay; get your life in order now.

Over time, the custom of kissing developed as a way for adults to express their love and affection for one another. The roots of this form of affection can be traced back to primitive times, when mothers fondled their children, much as mothers do today.
Much later, in the sixth century, society apparently accepted the custom of kissing between adults as an expression of their affection. Not surprisingly, France first accepted kissing in courtship (求爱). There, figure dancing was popular, and each dance was sealed with a kiss.
The custom of kissing swept from France through Europe to Russia, where Russian nobility loved to imitate the French. Eventually, the kiss was incorporated(包含) into marriage ceremonies, and today lip-locks couples into sweet matrimony(婚姻).
The custom of kissing today, as well as in ancient times, serves to pay homage to another. Early Romans kissed each other on the mouth or on the eyes to greet one another in a manner they thought to be dignified. One Roman emperor even ranked a person's importance by the body part he was allowed to kiss. He allowed important nobles to kiss his lips, less important ones to kiss his hands, and the least important ones to kiss his feet.
In Russia, the highest sign of recognition from the Crown meant a kiss from the Tsar himself. Today, natives of many African tribes pay homage to their Chief by kissing the ground over which he has walked.
71. What’s mainly talked about in the passage?
A. The way to express love and respect. B. The expression of affection.
C. The custom of kissing. D. The function of kissing.
72. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “homage” in the 4th paragraph?
A. recognition B. respect C. importance D. loyalty
73. It can be learned from the passage that ___________.
A. kissing is a widely accepted way to show love and affection
B. kissing used to be a proper way to show love on the wedding ceremony
C. kissing is a widely accepted way of greeting in the world
D. kissing from the Tsar is only sign of being accepted from the Crown
74. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It was France that made the custom of kissing go to the whole world.
B. Early Africans kissed each other on the mouth or on the eyes to greet one another.
C. One Roman emperor allowed important nobles to kiss his nose.
D. Russian nobility followed the custom of kissing from the French.
75. We can infer from the passage that __________.
A. mothers created the custom of kissing
B. kissing means differently on different occasions
C. figure dancing was usually sealed with a kiss in Russia
D. society found it hard to accept kissing in public in the sixth century
Educating girls quite possibly harvests a higher rate of return than any other investment available in the developing world.Women’s education may be an unusual field for economists, but increasing women’s contribution to development is actually as much an economic issue as a social one. And economics, with its focus on incentives(鼓励), provides an explanation for why so many girls are deprived of(剥夺)an education.
Parents in low-income countries fail to invest in their daughters because they do not expect them to make an economic contribution to the family: girls grow up only to marry into somebody else’s family and bear children. Girls are thus seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their brothers are sent to school — the prophecy(预言)becomes self-fulfilling, trapping women in a vicious circle(恶性循环)of neglect.
An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater earning abilities outside the home and faces an entirely different set of choices. She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children, ensuring that her daughters are given a fair chance. The education of her daughters then makes it much more likely that the next generation of girls, as well as of boys, will be educated and healthy. The vicious circle is thus transformed into a virtuous circle.
Few will argue that educating women has great social benefits. But it has enormous economic advantages as well. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages of female workers. Wages rise by 10 to 20 percent for each additional year of schooling. Such big returns are impressive by the standard of other available investments, but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has a significant effect on health practices, including family planning.
Topic: The significance of(76)___________education in developing countries
ViewpointEducating girls is more (77)__________than any other investment.
FamiliesFrom(78)__________familiesFrom educated mothers’ families
AttitudesGirls are of less (79)________than boys.Development should be for all (80)_________
PracticesThere is (81)_________investment in daughters.
Girls are made to stay at home, doing housework.
Girls and boys have(82)____________chances.
(83)_________ A vicious circleA virtuous circle
SignificanceEducating girls (84)__________to social benefits, economic advantages and health practices, including family planning.
(85)_________Educating girls in developing countries is important and rewarding.

第二节 书面表达
Dear teacher and students,
Our government is trying hard to build an energy-saving society. It is everybody’s duty to work hard and reach this goal.
However, not everybody has realized the importance of it. Take our school for example. Sometimes we can see that lights and computers are still on after class. Some students even forget to turn off the tap after using it and have water running all the time. Our papers are printed on only one side, causing much waste.
It’s time we did something to avoid this kind of waste. Firstly, make sure that all the lights and other electric facilities are turned off when we leave the rooms. Try to form the habit of turning off the tap immediately after using it. What’s more, papers should be printed on both sides and reused if possible.
In a word, if everybody has the awareness of reducing the waste and takes action, we can contribute to our society.
